Making Time for Goal Setting

This is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. I love Christmas but it’s not my favorite holiday in December. My eye is already on the New Year and the national holiday of Resolutions.

Why Goals Are Important as an Artist

Us artists, we live in a vacuum. We go out into the day armoured in sweatpants and to do lists a mile long. Goals help us not wander aimlessly through the days and weeks of my our professional lives. It can be too easy to look down in December and look up and have it already be August and have nothing to show for it. Goals build a lighthouse in the fog of self employment.

Goals also show us how far we’ve come. One of the great things about being a visual artist is that I can look on my Instagram account, scroll down to years past, and see improvement. It’s also important to have a list of non visual accomplishments. Small things can feel like big wins especially when it comes to technology obstacles.

So this week, as the dark greets us around 4PM and the coffee is delicious and warm, I’m spending time with notebooks and in quiet, thinking about where I want to be this time next year. And beginning to map the 10,000  tiny steps it will take to get there.
